2011 BARBECUE COMPETITIONS
Charbroil Pig Bowl-Columbus, GA
May 7, 2011-Pit Bulls "Up In Smoke" had a smokin' hot start to the 2011 bbq competition season at the CharBroil Pig Bowl in Columbus. Taking home a respectful Reserve Grand Champion, and placing 1st in Brisket, 2nd in Chicken, 5th in Ribs, and 8th in Pork. Beautiful weather, great neighbors, and an awesome venue. We look forward to heading back to Columbus, GA next year, where we hear it will be bigger and better than ever! The event was well organized and professionally run - thank you to all of those who worked so hard to see to it that the event went off without a hitch. Roman Roast on the River - Rome, GA
May 14, 2011- Once again, we pulled out a couple of decent placements in the Roman Roast on the River barbecue competition. While the adrenaline was pumping, it just didn't seem to be in the cards this week - we didn't have a repeat performance from our last competition - but that's okay. While we didn't take home a Reserve or Grand this week, we finished 8th Overall, with a 9th Place Finish in Pork & a 4th Place Finish in Brisket. There was a great field of competitors along with a great venue. We are pleased with the overall finish at the event - guess you can't win'em all!
Horsin' Around BBQ Showdown - Young Harris, GA
May 28, 2011 - Pit Bulls "Up In Smoke" takes home a Reserve Grand Champion taking home a respectful 4th Place finish in Chicken, 3rd Place Pork, and 2nd Place Brisket. Another excellent field of competitors and friends were there to compete and enjoy the festivities. We entered all ancillaries at this competition and took home 3rd Place in Sauce, 3rd Place in Dessert, and 3rd Place in Chili. Not bad for our 3rd competition of the season. Looking forward to Euharlee and then on to one of the big ones...Tryon, NC. Competition will be fierce but we are ready, willing, and able! Covered Bridge "Que
June 4, 2011 - The first annual Covered Bridge 'Que in Euharlee, GA was a great venue. Pit Bulls "Up In Smoke" took home 10th place Overall. Not what we had hoped for, but it wasn't bad. We took 6th Place in Chicken, 6th Place in Ribs, (not so well in the ol' pork), and 10th Place in Brisket. Wasn't our best, but finishing top 10 is alright - we had a great field of competitors. Festival of Discovery - Greenwood, SC
Had a great time and a fantastic assistant, Christopher Shaw, at the Festival of Discovery in Greenwood, SC. All things considered, we had a great time competing here. We took home 14th Place Overall - not bad for our first time competing at the event along with a wide field of competitors - 59 teams in all. Again, look forward to next year. Carolina Foothills BBQ Cookoff - Gaffney, SC
Oh, the joy of flying "solo". Well, this time it worked to my advantage. No assistant, no Rebecca (my wife) on this one. Brought home a 9th Place Overall Finish, with a 1st Place Ribs, 10th Place Chicken, pork - well, don't know what happened on that one, and a 7th Place Brisket. Was a little unsure about going into this solo but had to get the feet wet eventually. Turned out well...looking forward to getting my team mate, my wife, back out on the trail with me...think we can bring home some grands! Gearing up for all the GA Championship competitions on the horizon - including the big one-the Sam's Club! Take a look at our standings at the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
Dillard Bluegrass & Blues BBQ Festival - Dillard, GA
We were so proud & honored to have had the opportunity to compete at the prestigious Dillard Bluegrass & Blues BBQ Festival held each year at the Dillard House in Dillard, Georgia. We were up against some of the top #1 teams in the nation in this "Invitation Only" event. What an honor it was to compete among greatness. We took home a 7th Place Brisket and a 19th Overall Finish. Certainly wasn't our best, but with competition as fierce as it was, we were more than happy to accept a top 20 Overall Finish. Sam's Club National BBQ Tour - Marietta, GA
What a great time we had at the Inaugural Sam's Club BBQ Tour that took place in Marietta, GA in August. Just a hop, skip, and a jump from our back yard, the event was one to behold. We had the privilege and honor of competing against some of the best teams in 'Que! We took 7th Place Overall - unfortunately, not enough to get into the regional, but still a good finish. We missed a top 6 placement (and a chance to move on to regional) by 2 ten-thousandths of a point! It was bitter sweet. We will look forward to getting that top 6 placement next year!
Pigs N' Peaches - Kennesaw, GA
As always, another fantastic Pigs N' Peaches event right in our back yard. This has to be one of the most enjoyable events we have the privilege of competing in. Kennesaw really takes care of their teams with top-notch service - awesome job Kennesaw! We placed 17th Overall in this competition. Our pork killed us! We pulled off a 3rd Place Ribs and a 2nd Place Anything Butt though. Didn't pull off a finish like we did last year, coming in 5th Place Overall. That darn pork butt anyway! A new conquest has begun! The same pork we cooked last year that placed top 5 in nearly every competition is now placing at the bottom of the pack. Time to do some work!
Jug Tavern - Winder, GA
Our 2nd year competing at the Jug Tavern BBQ Festival and it did not let us down. We took him Reserve Grand Overall, with a 10th Place Finish in Chicken, a 2nd Place Finish in Ribs, a 7th Place Finish in Pork, and a 6th Place Finish in Brisket. We are back on our game and coming on strong. Looking forward to our next event in Decatur, AL the weekend of September 17th. Let's see if we can pull off another great placement.
Riverfest - Decatur, AL
Our first time competing at the beautiful Riverfest BBQ Competition in Decatur, Alabama. It was a beautiful location and enjoyable event. Didn't pull off the same win as in Winder last weekend, but did well in a field of 71 teams. We took home 9th Place Overall with two top tens - a 10th Place Finish in Ribs and an 8th Place Finish in Brisket. Not bad for the team!
Lake Oconee BBQ Festival
Ahhh, our nemesis competition. We placed horribly at Lake Oconee last year, but this year we came back with a vengeance. Taking Reserve Grand Overall with two top 10 finishes - a 3rd Place Finish in Ribs and a 6th Place Finish in Brisket. It was once again a field of some excellent competitors. We are proud of breaking that losing streak we had from last year. Looking forward to what we can in 2012
